V.I.S.S.A.A. Senior Girls AA & AAA Field Hockey

 Rules and Regulations

1.  Teams and players must be registered with BCSS to be eligible to play. 
2.  Current FIH rules to be followed, with exceptions.
3.  Umpires are responsible for timekeeping.
     POOL PLAY – Two 30 minutes halves with a 5 minute halftime.
     PLAYOFFS – Two 30 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime. 
4.  Green card – two minute penalty.
5.  Early start on short corner by defending player – player sent to centre. 
6.  SCORING – Maximum goals credited is plus 5 per game, allowing a goal differential of 5 for the winning team.

  • 4 points for a win by 2 or more goals
  • 3 points for a win by 1 goal
  • 2 points for a tie with goals
  • 1 point for a tie without goals
  • 0 points for a loss

7.  TIE BREAKER in POOL PLAY – If two or more teams have the same number of points on the completion of pool play, the following criteria shall be used, in order, to determine the final standings:
a) Previous Match Result: the winner of the match between two teams tied in points shall be awarded the higher position (not applicable if three (3) or more teams are tied).
b) If there remains equality among two or more teams, the team with the higher goal difference (which means “goals for” less “goals against”) shall assume the higher position. A positive goal difference always takes precedence over a negative one. Goal difference shall be calculated by subtracting Goals conceded from Goals scored. A maximum of five (5) goals shall be awarded in each game. (Example: a 5 – 0 score (5 goal difference), a 7 – 1 score (5 goal difference), a 7 – 3 score (4 goal difference. Goal difference will only be used for the matches between the teams that are tied.
c)  If this number is the same, then the team having the least number of “goals against” shall assume the higher position.
d) If the teams are still tied, you have a shoot out competition.

TIE BREAKER in PLAYOFFS – Penalty Shootout (8 seconds, 5 shooters) , still tied…  Sudden Death Penalty Shootout.

8.  Mouth guards are required for all players on the playing field.

9.  Substitutions – Each team will be allowed unlimited substitutions during the game.  Substitutions may be continuous, subject to these rules.

  • Substitutions may take place anytime EXCEPT during a penalty corner (penalty stroke is OK). The only exception to this rule is an injury to the defending goalkeeper.
  • Time shall be stopped for substitution of a goalkeeper.  The substitution may occur near the centre line, on the side designated by the umpires.
  • Substitution of a player may be made ONLY after a player from the same team has left the field.

  • Game Length: 30 minute ½’s with a 5 minute halftime.
  • Please clean-up after your team.
  • All spectators should view the games from outside of the fence.

Tie breaker in Pools

If two or more teams are tied within a group and have an equal number of points on the completion of the round robin, the following criteria shall be used, in order, to determine the final standings:

a) Previous Match Result: the winner of the match between two teams tied in points shall be awarded the higher position (not applicable if three (3) or more teams are tied).

b) Goal Difference: goal difference shall be calculated by subtracting Goals conceded from Goals scored. A maximum of five (5) goals shall be awarded in each game. (Example: a 5 – 0 score (5 goal difference), a 7 – 2 score (5 goal difference), a 7 – 3 score (4 goal difference). If 1b does not break the tie between the teams then the team with the highest goals for in the games between the tied teams will be given the higher ranking. Goal difference will only be used for the matches between the teams that are tied.

c) Least Goals Against: the team having the fewer number of goals against will be awarded the higher position.

If the teams are still tied, you have a shoot out competition

Tie Breaker in Crossover:

  • 10 minute sudden death, still tied…
  • Penalty Shootout (8 seconds, 5 shooters) , still tied…
  • Sudden Death Penalty Shootout.
